What is Moompi?
Who initiated the programme and
when
-
It was initiated in 1999
by the Department Of Education, Tshwane South
-
Eye Spices cc was awarded the tender
to develop and implement the programme. The brief
included the development of a muppet Moompi, that would
become the national Child Protection Character, together
with all supporting documentation, visual material,
music, etc.
-
The themes of
personal safety, cleanliness and basic HIV AIDS
are included in the programme
What has happened over the last
eleven years?
-
The programme has been
researched, developed, tested and implemented
over the last ten years
-
Based on feedback from tried
communities, the programme is being refined on an
ongoing basis
-
The programme and all it's
supporting material - music, rhymes, games, is currently
available in Zulu, Sepedi, English and Afrikaans
-
Translation in Tswana has just
commenced
-
Some spiritual, private, community
institutions and organisations, etc. are now using
Moompi also in other countries in Africa
How does the programme work?
-
Parents, educators, social
workers, police officers, nurses, psychologists,
community workers are guided and empowered to become
child protectors
-
A wide range of topics lead to the
point where trainees are guided working with "Moompi"
the Child Protection Muppet
-
The interaction is
between the trained educator and the somewhat uninformed
Moompi
-
The children will then correct the
behaviour of Moompi with a firm "yes" or "no"
Where and when is the training
conducted and how long?
Who is facilitating this
training?
Is Moompi for entertainment;
what about the live Moompi shows?
-
No, Moompi focuses rather on
edutainment
-
As part of Moompi sustainment, the
lovable man-size Moompi character visits schools and
other institutions on invitation
-
The duration of a typical Moompi
visit is about two hours where children participate in
their own language in practical lessons, singing and
dancing
Track record and sustainment of
the programme
-
The Moompi training teams do not
believe in a start-stop approach
-
Return on investment and sustainment are priorities that
are driven via continued post implementation
involvement, monitoring and refresher courses
